Description

All of us think about our classes or other work with students and how to improve those interactions. When we think systematically about that process, we increase the likelihood that we will understand what is working and what is not working in our classrooms or other learning environments. The scholarship of teaching and learning is a natural outgrowth of such systematic efforts. From the perspective of the individual faculty/staff member, it provides an opportunity for presentation or publication. From an institutional perspective, it provides an opportunity to spread “best practices” to a wider range of faculty/staff. This workshop will be a practical hands-on look at how to do the scholarship of teaching and learning. Individuals with a focus on a variety of approaches to learning are encouraged to attend. This might involve activities such as group work, simulations, flipping the classroom, specific strategies for helping students learn particular "skills" (writing, critical thinking, collaboration, etc.), projects involving the use of experiential activities, projects focused on global learning or, given University priorities, issues involved in creating safe and inclusive learning environments.

The first session of the workshop will be on Thursday May 30 from 1:00 to 4:30. The second session will be on Friday, May 31 from 8:30 to Noon. Participants not on 12-month contracts will receive a stipend of $150. In addition, those agreeing to participate in implementing an SoTL project next year (fall semester, J-Term, or spring semester), will receive mentoring and incentives for completing various stages of the project, and opportunities to share their findings with others.

Please register your attendance for both days.
